Do VPNs Protect Against Viruses?

Virtual private networks (VPNs) strengthen internet security by protecting personal data and information from prying hackers and scammers. But, do VPNs protect against viruses?

Although there are premium VPNs that offer malware protection, it cannot completely and solely protect your device from viruses. You will still need antivirus software to detect and protect your device from any form of harmful software.

How VPN Works

VPNs mainly work as an additional barrier from online criminals and spying agencies that want to steal your data.  A good VPN can conceal your true IP address by tunneling and encrypting data making it unreadable to hackers. Like camouflage, it allows you to surf the net, make online transactions, access websites anonymously with your identity and private data kept safe.

When it comes to malware, some high-end VPNs offer protective features from viruses or spywares but are not as efficient as antivirus software. It only prevents harmful programs from reaching your device.

How Antivirus Software Works

Hackers, scammers, identity thieves are not the only threats on the web. With any ongoing online activity you make, from receiving emails to simply browsing a website, your device is always at risk for viruses. This is why antivirus software is most appropriate and necessary in any device.

Viruses can be in the form of “trojans” which are pretentious apps with viruses in them, “worms” which replicate and destroy, and boot-sector viruses, which are found in external drives. Any of these can slow down your system, erase files, or permanently destroy your hardware.

The antivirus software will act as another form of barrier that will also detect any suspicious activity or code, warn you for a possible threat, and destroy the virus once detected. By keeping your antivirus software up to date, there is no reason for you to worry from any of these types of online threats.

VPN and Antivirus Software Work Together

VPN safeguards your online activities and personal data  from cybercriminals, while antivirus protects your system from malicious software. You will need both of them for optimum internet security. There are premium VPNs that go with antivirus software or combination packages available online.
